On the front cover of its 2009 Platinum Series catalog, Performance Bicycle encourages avid cyclists with the provocative headline, “Believe You Can.” Well, America's #1 Cycling Retailer is certainly a company that practices what it preaches. “Our goal was clear: we wanted to create the best, most dynamic catalog the bicycle industry had ever seen,” says Matt Magnani, Director of Retail Marketing.

The Challenges

“We had a vision for this catalog and wanted to create a piece that was exciting, vibrant and different from anything we had done before. We put a lot of creative energy into the design and needed the printing to make an impact,” says Creative Director Cathy Blair.

Matt Magnani had taken note of the many innovative printing technologies introduced by Intelligencer Printing over the past couple of years—including the proprietary Metalessence™ process and High-Definition Printing™ So when it came time to choose a printer, Intelligencer was on his short list.

The Solution

Intell’s production team worked closely with the Performance team to make the bikes as realistic as possible. “We used our Metalessence™ process to enrich the bicycles and applied advanced masking techniques to hit each individual bike spoke with gloss coating.” says Davison. “The masking and coating technique created a 3D effect, so the bikes would literally jump off the page,” adds Blair.

The Result

"Everyone who sees the catalog is blown away by it. It’s received an overwhelmingly positive reaction both from internal management and store managers, as well as from guests who voted with their dollars."
