Direct Marketers Can Improve Results Using New Hybrid Print Technology Installed at Intelligencer

LANCASTER, PA, April 19th, 2012 – Intelligencer Printing Company has installed Kodak Prosper S10 Imprinting System in it’s web press room to combine the economies of fast, offset web printing with the benefits of high quality personalization. Currently, there are fewer than a dozen printers nationwide with this new technology.

Direct Marketers know they can increase sales and motivate consumers to act by delivering relevant, personalized messages. However, the cost to produce large campaigns with personalized offers or messages can be very expensive.

“Our clients told us they wanted fast, efficient personalization capabilities for their direct mail campaigns, so we investigated options and found Kodak offers what no other solution can – the ability to provide “near” laser quality imaging on gloss coated paper at web press speeds,” said Garry Richwine, Plant Manager of Intelligencer Printing. “This is a significant capital expenditure at a time when many companies are pulling back”.

Founded in 1794, Intelligencer Printing (www.intellprinting.com) is a privately owned company boasting award winning heat set web, sheetfed and digital printing as well as complete finishing, mailing, marketing and fulfillment services. The company is a 2011 Recipient of NAPL’s Platinum Customer Plus Award for excellence in customer satisfaction.

Nearly 1 in 5 Smartphone Users Makes a Purchase After Scanning a QR Code

A survey of over 1,200 U.S. adults conducted by research firm Chadwick Martin Bailey looks at how consumers are using QR codes, what they’re looking for when they scan, and what will motivate them to make it part of their purchase process. Key results:

While only 21% know QR codes by name, 81% of respondents report having seen the ubiquitous black and white squares.

For smartphone owners, QR codes are becoming a part of the purchase process; Half of smartphone owners surveyed have scanned a QR code, and nearly one in five (18%) made a purchase after code scanning.

Results are more mixed as to the usefulness of the information received from scanning a QR code; 41% of respondents say the scan proved useful, 42% report mixed results, and 18% say the scan was not worth it.

Among those who scanned codes, reasons include: curiosity (46%), to obtain more information about a company, service, product, deal, or event (41%), to take advantage of a promotional offer (18%), or to gain access to exclusive content (16%).

The top reason to scan a QR code (noted by those who have scanned and those who haven’t) is interest in a discount, coupon, or free item (46%).

Magazines and newspapers are the top source for scanned QR codes (35%), followed by packages (18%), websites (13%), direct mailings (11%), billboards or signs (11%), emails (4%), and other (7%).

“Consumers are curious about QR codes and the information they can get,” notes Jeff McKenna, Senior Consultant at Chadwick Martin Bailey. “But companies need to understand what consumers expect from a scan whether it’s more information, a coupon, or exclusive offer. Companies who use QR codes successfully to drive engagement or sales will be those who meet customer expectations and offer compelling reasons to scan.”

About: Data for the Consumer Pulse study was collected from 1,228 U.S. adults (age 18+) via a nationally representative online survey questionnaire fielded by CMB in October 2011.

A Perfect 10 for Intelligencer at Neographics 2011
Lancaster Printer Scores 10 Awards for Excellence

The sky was the limit for Intelligencer Printing at Neographics 2011 as the Lancaster, PA, printer took home a Power of Print Award for a stunning brochure produced for NASA.

But that was just one of 10 Intelligencer printing projects honored during the annual exhibition and dinner ceremony, held on May 5th at The Crystal Tea Room in Philadelphia. The company also received Best of Category Awards for a catalog, brochures and a magazine, all four colors or more. Plus, they accepted six Franklin Awards of Excellence honoring a variety of catalogs, brochures, booklets, calendar, and a self-promotion brochure, all featuring the company’s proprietary high-definition printing process, and unique coatings.

In addition to the print awards, Denny Bushong, a pressroom supervisor and Intell employee of 46 years earned the Graphic Arts Associations “Craftsperson of The Year Award.”

“Once again this year’s entries were very competitive, but this year Intelligencer should be especially proud of their performance. The first two elimination rounds were judged by Printing Industries of America’s technical staff, so judging was even more rigorous than in the past. To win 10 awards, including a nomination for the prestigious Power of Print Award honor, is quite an achievement. This confirms that Intelligencer is able to produce extraordinary printing on a very consistent basis. This year they produced excellent work for companies like NASA, Armstrong, Performance Bicycle, QVC, WP Carey and a host of others. These firms depend on having the highest level of print quality, said Marge Baumhauer, President of the Graphic Arts Association, hosts of Neographics 2011.

Intelligencer Printing, one of the oldest operating commercial printers in the U.S., is known for its high quality color work, state-of-the-art web printing, and its progressive embrace of emerging technologies. “We take a lot of pride in every project we produce. Receiving awards at Neographics confirms that our peers value and respect the quality of our work as much as our customers do. It’s a good feeling,” says Intelligencer's President.

Neographics 2011 was run by the Graphic Arts Association (GAA), the printing and imaging industry trade association for Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware. The GAA invited more than 6,000 printers, typographers, advertising agencies, finishers, packaging companies, public relations professionals, graphic designers and others to enter Neographics. A team of judges reviewed all entries and awarded pieces that demonstrated exceptional reproduction technique and quality.

Since many people don’t get the chance to attend Neographics 2011, Intelligencer is offering to bring the winners to them with a private Winner’s Circle Showing. You can arrange to see Intelligencer Printing’s award winners by contacting the company at 1-800-233-0107 or myteam@intellprinting.com.
